Although skin packaging was introduced in the previous century, consumer acceptance of this packaging technology has only increased significantly in recent years. In the Netherlands as well, major packaging suppliers like Bliston Packaging are preparing for this concept with specially designed products, such as skin trays in various configurations and compositions.
Skin packaging is a growing trend in the packaging industry; the fresh meat sector in particular is increasingly focusing on this type of packaging. The main advantage of skin packaging is that products are packed without gas or air flows, which significantly extends their shelf life compared to traditional MAP packaging — in some cases by up to 10 days or more, says Arjan Hagoort.
In skin packaging technology, the top film is vacuum-formed tightly around the product, creating a second-skin effect. It is then sealed to the bottom support to create a hermetic closure.
Moreover, in this environment, fresh red meat undergoes additional aging, which benefits the quality of the product.
Another advantage is that the product presentation and branding of these packages have a premium appearance. The product stays perfectly in place and does not release moisture or drip during its shelf life. Thanks to skin packaging, it is also possible to display the product vertically or at an angle on the store shelf.
The key components of a skin package, aside from the food product itself, are:
• a suitable skin film
• an appropriate carrier or tray to pack the product in
• a tray sealer and the necessary equipment to carry out the packaging process
Top films for skin packaging have been developed by several leading suppliers, such as Sealed Air-Cryovac, Bemis, Suedpack, and others. Bliston Packaging has developed a standard range of skin trays suitable for meat and fish products, made from PET, RPET, and specific inner linings that offer a high oxygen barrier and feature an easy-peel layer.
Bliston Packaging works in close collaboration with Cryovac® to apply a skin layer to existing PET trays.
Gruppo Fabbri supplies tray sealers that are compatible with skin packaging technology.
